Spend your first £200 on audio, not video
The upgrade order almost every new streamer gets backwards, and why a 720p stream that sounds good beats a 4K one that doesn't.
Every few weeks someone asks me which camera to buy for their first stream. It is almost always the wrong question, and the answer costs them a few hundred pounds before they find that out.
Here's the thing nobody tells you early enough: an audience will watch a blurry video with clean audio for an hour, and will close a crisp 4K video with bad audio in about forty seconds. This isn't a preference, it's how attention works. Bad video is a thing you look past. Bad audio is a thing you have to actively decode, and decoding is tiring.
So this is the order I'd spend in, having done it in the wrong order myself.
#1. Fix the room before you buy anything (£0)
Do this first, because it's free and it beats a lot of hardware.
Most bad home audio isn't the microphone, it's the room. A hard-walled box with a desk in it produces reflections that arrive at the mic a few milliseconds after your voice, and your brain reads the result as "cheap".
Things that cost nothing:
- Move away from the centre of the room. Corners and centres are the worst spots for standing waves. Off-centre, closer to one wall, is better.
- Get soft things behind you and in front of you. A bookshelf with uneven books on it is a legitimately good diffuser. A curtain, a duvet on a stand, a wardrobe with clothes in it — all real acoustic treatment.
- Never point a mic at a bare wall. Point it at something soft, or at an open space.
- Get the mic closer to your mouth. This is the single biggest one. Doubling the distance from your mouth to the mic drops your voice by 6 dB relative to the room. A mic at 15 cm sounds dramatically better than the same mic at 60 cm, for free.
Do these four things and a £60 microphone will beat a £250 one used badly.
#2. A microphone (£70–£130)
Now buy the mic. Two honest options:
A USB condenser if you want one cable and no thinking. Plug into USB, pick it in your software, done. Downside: condensers are sensitive, so they pick up your keyboard, your chair, and your neighbour's dog. In a treated-ish room they sound excellent.
A dynamic mic if your room is bad and you can't fix it. Dynamics reject far more of what's around you, which is why broadcasters use them. They need you close — 5 to 10 cm — and cheaper ones may need an interface. If you can't control your environment, this is the safer buy.
What not to do: don't buy the mic with the biggest number on the box. Sample rates above 48 kHz do nothing for speech. 48 kHz, 24-bit is broadcast standard and is plenty.
#3. Closed-back headphones (£40–£90)
You need to hear what you're actually sending. Not what you hope you're sending.
Closed-back, so your monitoring doesn't bleed back into the mic. You're listening for the things you stop hearing after a week of familiarity: a hum you've tuned out, clipping on your loud laugh, a fan that spins up mid-sentence.
Enable monitoring in your software and listen to yourself for one full session. It's deeply uncomfortable and it will fix three problems immediately.
#4. Lighting (£30–£80)
Now we get to video — and it's still not the camera.
A cheap webcam in good light beats an expensive camera in bad light, every single time, and it isn't close. Camera sensors get noisy when starved of light, and noise is what makes a picture look amateur.
The minimum viable setup is one light, positioned slightly to one side of your face and slightly above eye level, bounced off something white rather than pointed straight at you. A £35 panel with a diffuser will transform a £40 webcam.
The one thing to avoid: a window or lamp behind you. Backlighting turns you into a silhouette and no software fixes it properly.
#5. The camera (£50–£300+)
Finally.
If you've done everything above, a decent 1080p webcam is genuinely fine and you can stop here. Most viewers cannot tell the difference between a good 1080p stream and a 4K one on the devices they actually watch on — and if you're streaming, your bitrate is the real ceiling anyway, not your sensor.
Upgrade to a mirrorless camera with a capture card when you have a specific reason: you want shallow depth of field, you're doing close-up product shots, or you're recording rather than streaming and the extra quality survives to the final file.

#The mistake I made
I bought the camera first. It was a good camera. My first twenty videos still sounded like they were recorded in a stairwell, because they were recorded in a room with hard walls and a mic sitting 50 cm away next to a mechanical keyboard.
Nobody commented on the video quality. Several people commented on the audio.
Fix the audio.
